Dank&&Dapper represents the idea of being or striving to be a well-rounded and multi-dimensional individual. Meeting your own standards of cool without sacrificing the beauty of the mind to appease the masses. Often times, you'll find that the union of beauty and substance to be a rarity. The purpose of this blog is to serve as a reminder that being yourself while pursuing a dream is much more gratifying, no matter what. You must appeal to yourself before you appeal to others. Dank&&Dapper is also the name of a lifestyle-brand I plan to launch in the very near future. In the meantime, delight in the visions of a visionary. [=♥

CAMPUS-COOL x VOL.10: MIDNIGHT MISCHIEF

Image Hosted by Imageshack.us
On Wednesday, October 26th, I experienced one of the biggest scares ever in all almost-22-years of living. So I was on campus when I decided I wanted to photograph this outfit at night because I felt it most suitable. When I do self-shoots, I usually use my 18-55mm lens, OK? It's easier to capture up-close shots and so on. I set up my substitute tripod, given that my actual tripod is currently crippled. Played around with the settings till I found one that worked best, aligned my left eye with the viewfinder and began searching for an item to focus on and that's when it hit me. Anyone who owns a camera should be very much acquainted with that swiveling sound the lens creates as it swivels rightward and leftward, in search of its point-of-focus--I realized I was standing in complete silence. Well, aside from the occasional roar of laughter that came from the kids across the street, bumming cigs and what not, it was dead-silent. I flew into a frenzy like, "oh, no! this can not be happening to me!" I've had occasions where I go on blogs and the author of it is complaining about being without their camera(s) and I was thought that to unfortunate. I thought maybe it was the body of my camera, but to make certain, I quickly detached, then attached another lens and the shutter went of almost immediately. I was also greeted with that swiveling sound the instant I looked through the viewfinder--phew! The problem was with the lens, not the camera. That's a less complicated problem given that camera bodies are more expensive than lenses. I simply can not imagine life with my main instrument used for creating. So, I took a deep breath and attempted to at least hear the shutter snap--nothing. I surrendered and retreated back to my apartment.
Image Hosted by Imageshack.us
I sulked and dragged my now seemingly heavy legs into my bedroom, plopped myself down on my bed, but before I could call it quits, I had to give it one more try. I attached the 18-55mm lens, aligned my eye yet again with the viewfinder and aimed at the half-full glass of water on my nightstand. I thought maybe, if I switched the lens to manual, instead of automatic, it would work again. I did so and noticed the camera was actually responding as I adjusted the lens back and forth. Alas! Hope. I adjusted it some more and then I heard it--snap! My lens still works. The swiveling sound was just some sort of disabled. I rejoiced and ran back outside to take these pictures.

A 1000 WORDS x AUTUMN'S ARRIVAL

Image Hosted by Imageshack.us
As I have previously mentioned, I delight in the Autumn and Winter seasons. The entire appeal of Autumn is irresistibly pleasant. The crispness of the air. Leaves change color and fall so elegantly to the ground. The rainfalls. Something about the transition of seasons and its influence on human conduct. More specifically--fashion. Being governed by nature is entirely a pleasure within itself. Now as temperatures fall, I find myself being more drawn to the sight of burnt-orange tones, the nuances of yellow, greens, grays and so on.

VIDEO: TONE x LEVI MAESTRO x "MAESTRO ON DRUMS" PT.2

Filmed by: Tone.

I was introduced to Levi Maestro via the social-platform of Twitter. Initially, I was not aware of the reason for his significance. However, I was aware of the bountiful amount of love he received/-es. After exploring his personal site, www.LeviMaestro.com extensively, I'm still not quite sure of what he does. I gather that he's a dynamic visual artist. Not sure, but I delight in his being nonetheless. I don't want to state much; I'd rather the content of the video speak for itself.

CHORUS OF 1977

Rare occasion - constructing a solid theme prior to conducting a self-shoot. I come up with a general idea and then follow its path to the final product. I suppose that in itself is a recurring theme. However, last week, prior to doing this shoot, I knew I wanted it to be reminiscent of a time that came before mine. Preferably somewhere between the 70s and 80s. And, the title of this post was inspired by English poet, Alexander Pope.

TEFFILOSOPHY VOL.11 x STRIVE IN STRIFE

Image Hosted by Imageshack.us
First and foremost, I thrive off of wielding power. It takes a conscious mind to admit that and fear the potentiality of scrutiny. Nothing wrong with wielding power, it's the matter you exercise your right to wield power that tends to hold fault.

As I disclosed early in the month, I had begun working on my photography project for the Autumn and Winter seasons; unfortunately, I have to consider postponing its execution to next Summer. Bear in mind that this decision was not entirely on the premise of preference. I felt sort-of compelled by the feeble actions of others to do so. However, this halt has driven me back to the drawing board and I am refurnishing some ideas, as well as concepts. It pains me deeply to have to do this, but it is what's best. Both for me and the nature of my art. This is where my mention of power comes into play. I anticipated the coming of this project heavily, only to be left feeling quite hopeless and helpless, and most dreadfully, powerless.

I seldom share details of my strife. I seldom personalize. It is important for me to keep most details of my personal-life just that--personal. It is entirely my choice to suffer in silence. I do not encourage that behavior in others, but I like to believe I have grown strong enough to deal. The beauty of striving in midst of strife, to me, lies entirely with the results. I've observed that amongst its slew of benefits, endurance rewards the soul of its possessor. After turning the age of 18, I began feeling the pressure of adulthood and embracing that desire to succeed and attain my own design of eminence and self-fulfillment by the age of 25. Now that I am approaching 22, I have decided it's best to inhale, exhale and return to creating entirely for the pleasure it yields. Along with releasing those inhibitions, I've learned to smile more often. A smile often serves as the greatest restraint. Whether it be the midst of pressure or stress. Sometimes you have to smile to keep from committing murder. I believe one problem we each deal with, is the idea of applying nonsensical pressures on ourselves to succeed beyond our wildest dreams. Do not get me wrong; an immense degree of discipline is necessary while in pursuit of anything worth having. Envision the life you want for yourself, map it out, attain the necessary instruments and pursue it diligently.

VIDEO: MARA HRUBY x "THE PANTIES"

Upon the release of Oakland-native, Mara Hruby's rendition of Mos Def's "the panties", I was a bit reluctant to entertain it fully. I suppose the situation was synonymous to receiving news about a remake of your favorite film. In your adoring heart and mind, it was finely executed; there isn't a need for a remake. Over time, after enduring a close friend's mild obsession with the track, I eventually caved in. I am delighted to admit that she indeed, recreated the energy of the song effortlessly and elegantly. As I sit here, writing this--while listening to her debut EP titled, "From her eyes", I am indulging in the experience that is Mara Hruby; divinely soothing to this fine Thursday night. The more I listen, the more I realize the EP is constituted of some more renditions such as Andre 3000 and Norah Jones' "take off your cool", as well as Bob Marley's "is this love" --classic records in my opinion.

She embodies this brand of elegance and poise I can't quite paint with words. That brand of beauty present in Black iconic female figures in the late 50s-late 70s era. The likes of Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne and so on. I am pleased that she seemingly recognizes that and presents herself in that light. Much love and respect to Mara. Hope to see her ascend into her throne of eminence.

VIDEO: T.GRANT x "CASES"

Directed by: Walu.

I was introduced to the art of Maryland-native, T.Grant by way of the director himself, via email. I was immediately taken by his stylistics frankly 'cause it is reminiscent of the artist, Scarface. His flow is mellow and laid-back, yet effective. His incorporation of story-telling encourages the appeal of the song and, the concept as well as execution of the video is exceptionally ill; I applaud it.

CAMPUS-COOL x VOL.9: HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN

I'm sure most music lovers have their own memory of a song titled, "house of the rising sun", whether sung by Bob Dylan or English-Rock group, The Animals, my memory however, is of legendary Nina Simone's rendition.

These photographs were taken on Tuesday after a seemingly failed attempt at a photo shoot. Initially my model and I planned to begin as early as possible, but ended up meeting around 4. I had some errands to run early in the day, as did she, but hers exceeded mine and took up most of the time needed. As you can imagine, the sun had already began to set, consequently sabotaging the nature of the entire shoot. We felt rushed and pressed for time, but got some great shots in nonetheless. So, technically this is not "Campus-cool", but I'd totally wear this to school. Yeah. Overlook that itty bitty aspect.

VIDEO: KENDRICK LAMAR x "RIGAMORTIS"

Directed by: The ICU.

The birth of Section 80 marked a pivotal point in my love for Hip-Hop, and music in general. A part of me wants to state that this track is one of my favorites, but in actuality, I have no favorites; I loved every single song. Like, I am running out of methods of expressing my love and appreciation of Kendrick Lamar. The man is a genius.

CAMPUS-COOL x VOL.8: TO BE WILD BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS

I am one of those people who anticipates the coming season far more sooner than its arrival. The minute I detect the presence of a cold front, I dig into my pile of Autumn/Winter clothes and grow incredibly eager to wear them. For example: two weeks ago, which is when these were photographed, the weather began its transition stage. It would be cold one day, and hot the other. I'm anemic, so I set out to be dressed according to weather, especially if there's any talk of it being cold. By gazing at the pictures, you can evidently see me wearing high-waist denim shorts with a Pebbles Flinstones shirt that reads, "Daddy's girl", a Ralph Lauren button-down, which I wore in this post as a skirt, a camo-jacket, some knee-high socks and some canvas-sneakers. So many contradicting factors in one outfit, eh? I love it though. I love when the weather mirrors the essence of my paradoxical nature.

AUDIO: TERIUS NASH x PHARRELL x "THIS SHIT REAL NIGGA"

Image Hosted by Imageshack.us

This is undeniably one of the greatest tracks on the entire album. Whenever I listen it, I become compelled to just "wild the fuck out". This, along with "ghetto", which features Big Sean and a couple of more other tracks. It was surprisingly refreshing to be exposed to this raunchy-street-side to Pharrell Williams. He always appears so refined and polished.

VIDEO: THE "ME" SERIES x KENDRICK LAMAR

Directed by: David Black

What strikes me as most alluring aspect of the artist that is Kendrick Lamaris his ability to seem and be just that: an artist. It is no news to those of you who either know me personally, or are familiar with this blog that Kendrick is, in my eyes, incomparable to most artists currently in the upcoming scene. His music provides me with a delightful degree of insight and substance. I can not express that enough. Thankful to have had the privilege to meet his acquaintance. Thankful to be able to listen to his music on a daily basis. Thankful for his existence in the music-world, period. Words can't express how much of an inspiration he serves to me, and we're only, what? 2 years apart in age? Just goes to show: inspiration knows no realms, no boundaries, no limits. Respect.

ONCE UPON A TIME, NOT LONG AGO

Image Hosted by Imageshack.us
Some twit thought it wise to steal my glasses a couple of semesters ago; don't ask me why. I suppose 'cause they were by Michael Kors? Still, that's silly. I think whomever did it, did it to spite me. I would delve into details, but nah. Anyways, I finally got around to replacing them 2 weekends primarily 'cause I am in dire need of them. Well, I wouldn't say dire, but they are necessary. I wasn't certain if I wanted to get a pair similar to my last pair, so I had my sister help me decide. Ended up with a pair of Ray Ban's. These are bit bigger, but lighter than my last frame and differ in color; the MK's were deep-forest-green.

VIDEO: MOMENTS AT MADE x ERYKAH BADU| JAYBO| MIKI

Words do not do justice in painting the illuminating force, that which is Erykah Badu. Her presentation of herself in nothing short of exemplary and, surely never ceases to amaze me. As for this project, constructed by the MADE team, I am beyond pleased with the idea of artists of different facets, coming together harmoniously and creating in a manner that is spell-bounding and appealing. I delighted in their ability to delight in the energy of the centerpiece, Erykah Badu, and draw inspiration. This "Moments at MADE" project along with "Vision of Visionaries", masterminded by the folks over at MADE is incredibly brilliant; I applaud it.

Not certain of the extents of your familiarity with my blog, but I'll have you know that Tao Okamoto is one of my favorite models. Along with the likes of Agyness Deyn and Abby Lee Kershaw. I haven't posted an editorial in quite a while, but upon seeing this, I could not resist. I'm especially fond of the fact that it's not typical of an editorial; a bit of a cross-breed between lifestyle and editorial.I think that element can be accredited to the choice of location; editorials are usually photographed indoors. Well-done nonetheless. Photographed by Lachlan Bailey, styled by fashion editor, Clare Richardson.

VIDEO: FRANK OCEAN x "SWIM GOOD"

Directed by: Nabil.

I haven't quite got around to indulging in the seemingly seminal melodies of OFWGKTA's very own , Frank Ocean, but from all that I've heard, I am fiercely impressed. By this song, especially. Just his name alone exudes a certain degree of charm and allure.
And might I add: upon learning the video was directed by none other than Nabil, undoubtedly one of my favorite visual artist, I was overcame by a heightened state of excitement. And that Frank closely resembles Jay Electronica in that attire.

THROUGH LOVE AND BEYOND

A friend of mine asked me the other night if I had ever been in love? What did it feel like? Or could I guess what it would feel like. To which I responded: no, can't say that I have, however, I have cared for someone very deeply and still do till this day. I can say that being in their presence or speaking with them induces the feeling of being elevated to an entirely new level of existence. You feel consumed with an inexplicable sense of excitement and empowerment. Love can be and is a great inspiration. Then, she cried. Lol I suppose she feels like she's been missing out on that feeling. That's partly why we pursue love; we all desire to feel something that varies in explanation each time it is spoken of. With each explanation exceeding the ones that came prior in grandiosity. That I speak of Love often is because I receive it often and I wish to be afflicted and consumed by it, always. We often speak our afflictions into existence. I do my best to give it often, as well. Love must be welcomed with twice the degree it is given. But, I digress. These photographs were taken over the summer at a park in the Bronx. (won't mention the name, but if you recognize it, much love to you). It's crazy 'cause I am using this pictures in the manner I initially intended to. On this day, which I cannot remember, my idea was to wear that shirt in two different ways and make a post about how dynamic an item of clothing as mere as a shirt can be. Oh well, here it goes.

VIDEO: THE GREATER THAN WEALTH [GTW] x "SUBLIME"

Filmed & directed by: Lawrence Yamoah of Lucidperfections

I am connected with Nigerian-native, Chicago-bred artist The GTW via twitter, as well as Facebook and I can recall some short while ago, he said something along the lines of "wow I can sing...like I can really sing". From the outside-looking-in, it appeared to be a moment of revelation of a hidden talent. Initially, I was excited for his newly found discovery, but upon hearing "August" and now this--Sublime, the name encompasses it all. I can't help but delight in such great talent. Much love and respect, King.

TEFFILOSOPHY VOL.10 x DIVISION WITHIN COLOR-LINES | BET HIP-HOP AWARDS

Image Hosted by Imageshack.us
Over the years, the BET network has undergone some changes most of which I have not necessarily been in agreement with, however, I still find myself delighting in the BET Hip-Hop awards. As I'm certain many others hold similar sentiments More specifically, the cyphers. A collective display of raw and irrefutable talent. The re-introduction of old-school artists, the cyphers, as well as performances are the usual contributing actors to the collective appeal of the show. But, this year, as well as last, there was something missing: the category catering to the acknowledgment of African artists. I did not watch the awards in its entirety, however, I was able to watch the cyphers via BET.com. It was painfully brought to my attention by an article I just read a short while ago, which explained the nature and solution of this matter in exemplary detail:

Let me get this straight. BET goes into Africa (with over 800million people) and establishes its subsidiaries with the obvious goal of making profit from Africans. Yet, within the USA, it cannot dedicate even one minute of air time in its actual award shows for the very Africans it solicits and makes monies off of? If you will not air African artists at your BET Awards or BET Hip-hop Awards show, why patronize these acts? You are already in Africa so what exactly is the point of a nomination on a BET Awards show or making our artists go through a BET Hip-hop Awards Cypher presentation and yet BET Networks does nothing with it?

CAMPUS-COOL x VOL.7: THE RISING OF THE PANTHER

Here are some better photographs of my outfit from last week Thursday. What can I really say about that day? Besides the fact that the temperature was especially indecisive. It was Winter in the morning, Spring at the peak of noon and Summer early evening, then back to Winter at night. Don't get me wrong, this is my favorite time of the year: the transition period. From Winter to Spring and Summer to Autumn; I delight in the temperatures most. What I find most enticing is the weather compelling me to conceive outfits that are usually more contradicting than usual. I get to wear my paradoxical nature on my sleeve. A sweater with a skirt, leather jacket with shorts, and the list goes on and on. I love how we are both knowingly and unknowingly governed by nature's course.

SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY, LIKE THE NIGHT

Any of you familiar with English poet, Lord Byron's poem titled, "She Walks in Beauty"? If not, you ought to look it up and read it; one of my favorites.
-------------------------------------

I believe I mentioned conducting a shoot with my partner/assistant this past Thursday. Seeing as my models were not able to be present, I had to play that role. We found this gown in lodged under the driver's seat, given to Jia by her grandma and she literally forced me into it. Lol. It's been quite a while since I've served as a subject to another photographer other than myself. It was an overall fun experience. I'm such a hands-on type-of-person in matters of creative conducts. During the shoot, I found myself intervening, inputting my directorial advises. All-in-all, it was a contributed effort; styling, directing, editing, while all photographed by Jia.

VIDEO: COMMON x "THE GAME"

Directed by: Nabil

"I never kissed the ass of the masses, I am the Black molasses.

What's most enjoyable about artists of intellect, culture and substance, much like Common, is the conveyance of their indisputable loyalty to their art. MIXTAPE: DOM KENNEDY x "WESTSIDE WITH LOVE II"

Image Hosted by Imageshack.us

Like most, I can determine the worth of a song about 30 seconds deep into, but an entire compilation, one to three month's time. I anticipated the release of this upon hearing "grindin'" and eventually, "designer shit". And like most, I have mood-fitting music in reserve; Dom's sound is predominantly for moments of chill and editing photos. Pleased to say I had the pleasure of making West coast--left coast--the best coast's very own Dom Kennedy earlier this year. I'm pleased to see the Hip-Hop talents produced by the west; it is my honest opinion that Dom is undeniably a great among greats.

The first track to be released by The The Weeknd, which I'm presuming will be on his third project titled, Echoes of Silence; the completion of the trilogy including his two previous projects. Versatility is the essence of art; The Weeknd's music never ceases to possess this necessary element. I'm always delighted to hear new releases from him; his music evokes an unspeakable amount of solace. Mood-commanding, thought evoking, and vocals that induce a drug-like state of trance.

TEFF x COMPANY: THE CONCEPT OF CHARACTER DYNAMICS

This past Thursday: those who know me well, know my time is incredibly valuable. I could not let this day go to waste, so I grabbed a bite to eat and designed the course of my day. Lately, I have sunk knee-deep into my creative cycle. This usually consists of a great degree of isolation and a lot of writing, reading and reflecting. A certain degree of isolation breeds the purest form of creativity and inspiration. I've found that it's easier to explore the depths of the self by setting much-needed-self-imposed limitations upon myself. The products have been nothing less of reassuring. I think you will find that freedom, among many things, has no state of infinity, but rather entails the acknowledgment that the self requires a unit of government. To most, freedom is the freedom to express freely without any dire consequence. Reflect on how inconsiderate that definition is; freedom at the expense of the freedom of others. Do not think me restrained because I pose limitations on myself. I am free because I am aware certain aspects of myself must be constrained during certain intervals of my existence. I say that to say this: Thursday was undoubtedly one of the most refreshing days I have experienced. It was a delight to break free from the grasp of solitude. Solitude is a cruel mistress. Shattering my vow not to eat Mickey D's had to be the most delightful aspect of my day: I went without it for 4 short months. One thing that I did realize due to the events of that day: friends are easily obtained, but friendships, seldom. Many friends, yet very few friendships.

VIDEO: THEOPHILUS LONDON x "LVRS OF GOD"

It's rare that you find artists whom openly express their inspirations and you see it worn on, so evidently. "LVRS of God is an intimate exploration of Theophilus London's chameleonic mind through his inspiration and iconography." --his stylistics in music, as well as his being as a whole, is a total representation of all the factors that has inspired him. I admire and respect that a great deal. The filmmakers, Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson of R+I Creative, did an excellent job in capturing his essence. I am also incredibly delighted to learn that this was partly filmed at his performance at the Brooklyn museum; I was somewhere in the audience, cooling with my love, Camacho.

CAMPUS-COOL x VOL.6: A SUMMER IN VENICE

By my outfit in this post, you can tell it was not recent. Seeing as I am clothed in a short dress, accompanied with a light blazer and knee-high socks, it was at the beginning of this sudden chill that's overcome just about everywhere on Earth's surface. I wore/took these about 2 and half weeks ago, maybe? The weather was at its best that day, and what made all the more better, is the fact that I dressed perfectly for it. You know? You have moments when you anticipate the weather to be at a certain temp, then you dress for it only to end up under-dressed? And you're left either, too warm or too cold? I hate when that happens. Anyways, I titled this post "A Summer in Venice" frankly because the photographs possess an undertone, reminiscent of the essence of old Italy. The composition of light and how it complements the colors I'm wearing, as well as my complexion. Yeah, Italy is definitely one of my dream vacations. One day.

"Blue sky" is the second single to be released from Common's upcoming album titled, "The Dreamer, The Believer", set to be released on November 22nd. And he just released a book very recently? Wow. Amazing. I can boldly state that I am yet to hear a Common track that I am/was not pleased with. What is most admirable and respectable about Common as an artist, is his dedication and sheer humility. ALBUM: DTMD x "DTMD: MAKIN' DOLLAS"

Image Hosted by Imageshack.us

Prior to listening to this LP, my familiarity with the Maryland-duo, DTMD, which is an acronym that stands for Dunc and Tone Makin' Dollas, as well as a direct play off of 80-90s Hip-Hop duo, EPMD--stems from "The Basics (EP)". Which only consisted of 5 tracks; enough for one to get a feel for what their music has to offer, but minimal enough for one to anticipate more. The release of this LP was necessary. My fondness of their music not only stems from the fact that it's reminiscent of the essence of the old-school, but 'cause of this unspeakable degree of soul. Yes, soul. Listen. Something irresistibly appealing about artists of today whose strife is to keep the very quality of Hip-Hop culture alive. Peace and love to Dunc and Toine . Keep rising.
